Region 10 Rep's Blog posted December 12, 2011: Hello Region 10! We hope everybody is getting ready for the holidays. Don’t forget to keep an eye out on the weather when driving and all the other drivers out there. A patch of black ice could make all the difference, so please drive accordingly to road conditions. We have seen so many people skid into ditches already this winter. If you check out the OSAID website you may notice that the countdown for the Conference is on! We are both very excited for the Conference and hope to make a difference. Also there is a draw for a $100 voucher on the OSAID website if you want to check it out here is the link http://osaid.org/index.php/contests/wear-a-seatbelt-contest.html . posted November 15, 2011: Hello Region 10, We hope that everyone had a safe Halloween and are getting ready for the winter. This is the time to start getting your snow tires put on and make sure your wipers are working properly. It could just save your life. The contest on the OSAID website for the next texting and driving slogan is in the voting stage. So please check it out and vote for your favourites! Here is the link http://osaid.org/index.php/contests/osaid-slogan-contest.html . Many schools in our region recently have seen the video ‘Damages”. This video showed the impact that results from impaired driving crashes. We feel that the students understood the message and will think twice before getting behind the wheel impaired, or even getting in a car with an impaired driver. If you get the chance to see one of these presentations, we recommend you do, it has a very strong message. If you wish to contact either of us our emails are,

posted August 16, 2011. Welcome to Region 10's new Associate Rep, Jenna. Here's her first blog... Hello everyone, As some of you may know, Region 10 did not have an Associate Rep last year but we do now! I am excited to begin working more with OSAID this year. I am also excited to be working with the continuing Rep, Michael. I ran for this position to become more involved with OSAID as I know how it feels to lose someone to impaired driving. I can't wait to work with all the wonderful people on our SAC team and on the BOD team. If you have any questions for me, I can be contacted at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. There will be lots of things going on, from dances to electing the new OSAID SAC members. SAC members are responsible for contacting schools, helping to start up new OSAID chapters and support existing ones , fundraising across their Regions, helping with the annual Conference and more. If you are interested in being a part of SAC you have to attend Conference and be elected by your region. posted March 22, 2011: Thanks to Bray Motors in Hunstville for their kind donation to Almaguin's OSAID chapter! posted March 17, 2011: Hello Region 10, Two weeks ago the first meeting for Almaguin Highlands Secondary School annual mock crash took place. The theme for this year’s mock crash is a bush party. People from the OPP, MTO, Health Unit attended the meeting, along with our staff advisor, a vice principal and five OSAID members. This Monday is the next meeting for the mock crash. We are hoping to confirm dates and places for the mock crash, and gather more details about the simulation. posted February 25, 2011: Hello Region 10! As you all know, Conference is coming up quite soon and the early bird deadline is March 25, so register soon if you plan on going. There are going to be a lot of things going on at this conference and the theme is superheroes. Not to mention this conference is hosting not only Ontario, but all of Canada! posted January 21, 2011: Hello Region 10! I hope everybody had a fun and safe winter vacation. I'm also hoping that you are all keeping safe on the roads, even though the holiday rush is over the roads are still slick in some areas. Also a reminder that if you wish to report a drunk driver call 9-1-1. posted December 17, 2010: Hello Region 10! I hope you are driving carefully as most of the Region has gotten quite a bit of snow recently. Not to mention it is very important that you remember that impaired driving does not mean being intoxicated only. If you look away from the road for a moment it can be considered impaired driving, especially if you use your cellphone while driving. And, with the icy road conditions collisions are much more likely to occur. posted November 17, 2010: Hello Region 10. It's finally November which makes Conference only 6 months away. So, if you want to find out more about Conference it is up on the OSAID website. New details are appearing there frequently - keep checking! OSAID is still in the Aviva Community Fund and we still could use your votes. All you have to do is register on the website www.avivacommunityfund.org then confirm your email and vote. If OSAID wins we can better combat impaired driving with our idea "OSAID GOES MOBILE"! For more information on this idea please view this link. And, with the snow and ice coming don't forget that the roads can be much more dangerous! With that in mind don't forget to put on winter tires when the time comes and look out for slippery conditions. -Michael , Region 10 Rep posted October 22, 2010: Hello Region 10. As the year progresses we are seeing new things happening with OSAID. First of all, the theme for Conference in May is... *drum roll please*... Superheroes! Also, the regestration forms for conference are already on the OSAID website. posted September 18, 2010: Hello, posted August 19, 2010 Hello Everyone! Michael , Region 10 Rep
October is a very exciting month for students fighting impaired driving across the country. For the past 10 years, Student Life Now has sponsored NSAIDD Day: National Students Against Impaired and Distracted Driving Day. NSAIDD Day is held the third Tuesday of October annually. That means that this year it will be on Tuesday October 20th. Many schools choose this day to hold awareness events. One that is popular in my region is a White-out. According to MADD, in 2008 there were an estimated 11,773 people killed in a crash involving a driver with an illegal Blood Alcohol Content (BAC). Roughly every 45 minutes, someone died unnecessarily due to someone else’s bad choice. During a White-out, schools represent these deaths by “killing” a student. Every 45 minutes, a student will leave his/her classroom and change into all black or white. The time is written across their forehead and they do not speak for the rest of the day. They are essentially dead but are a constant reminder to their classmates about the consequences of driving impaired. This is a very effective demonstration. It was because of my school doing this when I was in grade nine that I joined OSAID. I can remember being in my history class and having about half the class be dead (it was a small class). If your school is running a special NSAIDD Day event this year, let me know! Send me pictures or just a short email and it will be in next month’s blog! I hope you all had safe and enjoyable summers! Now that everyone is getting back into the swing of things at school, I’m hoping that with new faces at the high schools in Region 10, there is some interest in starting up new chapters. Starting an OSAID chapter at your school seems like a very daunting task. While it can be a lot of hard work, it could be one of the most rewarding things that you accomplish during high school. You’ll be saving the lives of your peers and preventing the pain that comes along with losing a friend. So what do you need to do to start a chapter? 20 people to make your chapter work What if you’re the only one in your school that seems to care about this issue at all? The OSAID Ambassador Program is for you! An OSAID Ambassador is a single student in the school who works on a peer to peer basis to spread the message about the dangers of driving when impaired. You will still be saving the lives of your friends and could potential start up a chapter in a few months!

Hello Region 10! It’s my great privilege to be able to be the Region 10 Rep for a third year in a row. I have a lot of high hopes for the region this year. I would like to hold another workshop, but this time at my school, Almaguin, since it is central to the other schools in the region. It will be in late October or early November so stay tuned for more details. I think that an important goal of this year is connecting with the community since in past years, most of the member schools have not utilized the resources that their communities have to offer them.
I know that some schools had difficulties raising funds to attend conference last year. I encourage everyone to remember the IBAO's support of OSAID - you may be able to apply for sponsorship from member brokers to attend the Provincial Leadership Conference in May. If you would like more information on how to go about doing this, please drop me an email at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . One of my goals this year is to have the highest ever attendance of students from region 10. I hope to have a bus starting in North Bay and stopping along Highway 11 to bring students to Conference. If we were to use about 4-6 seats for luggage, we could fit from 32-36 students! This would triple the amount of region 10 delegates from last year! If you think that your chapter would be interested in this bus, please let me know. I can only do this if I have confirmations early. So, email me as soon as possible, please.
If you have any ideas or or questions that you would like to ask me, please email me {I love getting emails =)} Also, let me know when you have anything happening in your school, and I mean anything, that has to do with OSAID. Announcements, poster campaigns, fundraisers, ANYTHING! Whatever you send me will be written about in my blog as well as any pictures that you send in. Remeber the OSAID Newsletter, too.
Hope you are all having a safe and enjoyable summer, Danika |
