OSAID

posted January 5, 2012:   It's sad to see 2011 go by so quickly, but exciting to have 2012 begin! Region 5 has been  busy raising awareness within the community! At St. Maximilian Kolbe CHS  the OSAID group launched the R.I.D.E Campaign for York region with help from the YRP, fire fighters, associates with MADD and camera Crews from CTV. A short assembly, a speech from impaired driving survivor Jessica Seymore, and the first R.I.D.E program launched right  outside the Aurora High School began the season to keep impaired drivers off the road. No drivers were ticketed for being impaired (bonus!), but the local police helped get the message out into the community. The need to keep putting the OSAID message out  is still there. Last year, here were  886 impaired-by-alcohol charges and 44 impaired by drugs charges. We are one of the the answers to preventing impaired driving in Ontario and across Canada.   Registration is open NOW for conference, so lets go, sign up I can't wait to see you there!! . Check out this link for a new O.S.A.I.D. contest! It's easy all you have to
do is type in your name, school and e-mail address.

posted November 18, 2011 : Hi Region 5! The P.O.W.E.R. conference happened in Newmarket on October 21st and was a great success. Our guest speaker was D.O. (for anyone who was at Conference last May he  was there!), Matt Evans, as well as Good life Fitness and AA comprised  our three workshops  with a healthy lunch from Subway! Following this York Region will be hosting their  annual R.I.D.E. launch Monday November 21st at St. Maximilian Kolbe hosted by Kevin from  Breakfast Television. Just a reminder that the December edition of OSAID Speaks is online so check it out! Contact Alexandra at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. posted October 20, 2011:    Alcohol ignition interlock program, ever heard of it? The program is designed to prevent someone who is under the influence from operating a motor vehicle.  The driver must first pass a breathalyser test prior to starting their vehicle. If they are above the legal .05% blood alcohol level, they will be ‘locked out’, unable to start their vehicle until they sober-up. Currently these systems are used by the government to monitor previous impaired driving offenders.  At first I was sceptical; couldn’t a sober friend start the vehicle for the impaired driver? This is true, but the device requests another breath sample at random intervals while the vehicle is in motion. If the driver refuses or produces a sample that is over the legal limit the driver is requested to pull over. If the driver does not pull over a horn is blasted until the car is stopped. All this is done to shut down the vehicle and alert all surrounding drivers of an impaired driver. What I want to know is why aren’t they installed in every vehicle? If it means taking a breathalyser test every time before starting the engine in order to save even one life, I’m in.   What do you think? Should these devices be mandatory in all vehicles? posted September 18, 2011:   We’re half way through September and school is going fast! Our society’s fast paced life style usually causes us to miss some of the little details around us. In school that might be missing the fact that you have a quiz which you were completely unprepared for  but, while driving,  trying to multitask and get things done on the go may mean missing the glowing red brake lights that came on abruptly right in front of you.  Whether you realize it or not if you drive at some point you can be a distracted driver. Anything from changing the radio station to drunk driving is driving impaired.

Late this summer I became a G2 driver, this means I am now able to drive by myself. I myself feel the pressure of picking up that little piece of telephone technology with the flashing light that seems to call to me almost every minute of the day, but while driving I know it needs to stay where it is. No text message is worth someone else’s life. Having my G2 class licence is a great advantage when I want to go out, but rarely do I go by myself. It’s always nice to have someone else sitting up front to be another pair of eyes for me or to change the station, or turn up the heat in the chilly weather that seems to be sticking around.  We can all do little things like picking a responsible friend to ride up front to be another pair of eyes and help you be less distracted behind the wheel.

With all that said, one of the two region 5 conferences is happening very soon! October 21st to be exact! I’ll give you a sneak peak: one of three workshops will be run by Goodlife Fitness to get some energy going (Yoga perhaps? We’ll have to see!)  Information sheets will be sent out to some schools next week, so let’s get the ball rolling- if your school needs information, or has any questions don’t be afraid to contact me, Alexandra,  at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. posted August 18, 2011. Welcome to Region 5's new Rep, Alexandra and Associate, Kabrina! Here's Alexandra's first blog...  A warm hello Region 5! We’ve had a wonderful summer to start off another busy year with OSAID.  My Associate,   Kabrina and I are planning two regional workshops this coming year and  hope  to enjoy activities and gather great resources to bring back to your schools. Keep checking in to make sure you don’t miss registration!  Before all the commotion of school starting, I thought I would see if anyone out there was interested in winning an iPod Nano? Or perhaps a $25 movie voucher? There is a little work to do first. Everyone should know about the cell phone law made in 2009- No use of Cell phones while driving. We know that texting while driving is Impaired Driving. OSAID is looking for a slogan to fit this theme. As long as you attend an OSAID member school you are free to enter as often as you like for a chance to win either of these great prizes! Go to http://osaid.org/index.php/contests.html for more information! Your school NOT an OSAID member school? Contact OSAID ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
